    Default Underwater Cosplay

I heard about it and it just so happened that one of my plans requires an underwater shoot. (A fish. What the heck was I thinking, really? XD)

There aren't many helpful guides for cosplayers for going underwater. But I know a few stuff like water pressure, currents and makeup that won't work in water and a LOT of Photoshopping required. So just want to ask:

    1. Are eyeliners (gel and liquid) durable in water?
    2. Will fabric paint run?
    3. Is there any concealer/foundation that might survive a few dips into water?
    4. Will self-sewn costume withstand the water pressure?
    5. I know shooting in the sea is practically asking for it, since SG waters are dirty like, VERY VERY dirty. But is there anywhere that has a deep pool with sand/stone flooring? I know a place with a mini pool with a stone flooring but it's... less than 50cm deep

    Any help appreciated, thanks ><

Fabric paint definitely won't run, since it's meant to be washed along with the fabric itself.

the eyeliner depends very much on the brand, there are some that declare themselves as being sweat/water proof, so they are your best bet. I have a cream foundation that claims to be waterproof from Covermark Japan, it does seem so but I havent tried soaking my face in water before. You can try setting your makeup with a makeup setting spray, I know urban decay and a korean brand (face shop I think) sells them though I've heard of people using hairspray before but it can be bad for the skin.

I somehow think that the water pressure bit won't be too much of a worry... think of it as taking a bath while fully dressed. Will your clothes come apart? Just remember to secure the more detailed bits down, and you should be alright. You might lose a detail or two, like beads, sequins, glued on things, but it won't come apart completely. ^^

This is a very ambitious project, and I applaud your daring even to attempt such a thing.

Fabric just doesn't flow as smoothly or prettily as you're led to believe in movies. In most cases, they are also heavily CGed.

My recommendation is to instead rent a green screen studio, and simulate the flowing fabrics with a rig.

You can do this by using the near invisible fishing wire, and a long pole held up by stage hands. That way, you can also keep your make up on without it washing off.

P.S. I definitely wouldn't recommend using Hairspray to set your make up. It's a very very very bad idea.

First of all, try and get a pool that allows you to do a photoshoot setup in their area. This solves your current/dirty water problem. Get someone who owns a pool in the backyard or something.

    1. Are eyeliners (gel and liquid) durable in water?

Certain brands don't run easily so do check their label or something along those lines.

    2. Will fabric paint run?
Depending on the type of fabric paint you use, it may or may not run. If you're worried that your current setup would run, paint on some extra cloth and soak in water to see if it runs. Do take into consideration that if you're in a pool, there's a small amount of chlorine that might affect your paint. So do a check.

    3. Is there any concealer/foundation that might survive a few dips into water?

Again, certain make up might stand up to water. Go search for their label or something and go test.

    4. Will self-sewn costume withstand the water pressure?
Your costume won't be affected by water pressure. Your lungs will. Basically, the deeper you go, the more crushing power it has on your lungs, making it harder to breathe(if using air tank). But if you're booking a pool, there's no need to worry about pressure.

    5. I know shooting in the sea is practically asking for it, since SG waters are dirty like, VERY VERY dirty. But is there anywhere that has a deep pool with sand/stone flooring? I know a place with a mini pool with a stone flooring but it's... less than 50cm deep

Well as I've said, try to book a pool that allows you to do a photoshoot setup. If they're nice enough, you could even bring your own stones and place them in. Else, do some photoshop work by taking your pool shots as stock photos and placing them on a nicely rendered background.

I remember someone in SG did an underwater shoot in a pool before. I can't remember who though...

    Some underwater KH cosplay links:

Pool ideas: Take the photo so that it doesn't show the bottom of the pool
or photoshop the bottom of the pool (cos most pools will have tile like things on the bottom so you'll want to photoshop that away so that it looks like its bottomless)

shirou>> I don't mind going into water coz I saw underwater photos and someone motivated me to try underwater cosplay. I know there's prolly gonna be lots of saikangs diving in and adjusting the cloth and photographer having slight hell with AF and high ISO captures and so on =/ I don't think anybody among us knows what's a rig, aha~ lllOTL hairspray, I doubt I'll be using it. It cracked and whitish stuff appeared all over my wig, so no way I'm using it for skin U_U

Knife>> I'm thinking of hijacking Kazuo's condo's pool lol. I'm gonna use Dylon Fabric Paint, or the ones found in Popular bookstores. I think I'll buy both bottles to test it out in a pool. And I'll be holding my breath, since I can't learn how to use air tanks overnight unless a diver offers to teach me.

Lightz>> fabric paint ran from my cloth before. Was trying out gradient painting and added water after painting the cloth. Then again I think it was the timing I added water.

iffy>> /facepalm. I didn't think of photoshopping away the cracks in between the tiles. Thanks for the idea =3

The last time I shot an underwater scene was for a film project, and make up's not gonna matter at all. It's gonna go haywire the minute you go under, but with the way water works, you can probably disguise the lack of make up with good lighting techniques.

Shoot on a sunny day, so rays of light can be used to illuminate important parts of your body and outfit.

Also, having a stage hand above the pool surface holding either a big covering to block light going in, or a reflector to throw light into the pool can also make a difference in the overall treatment.

Do ask for more SKs to help out for this one. You'll probably need at least 5 or 6 SK at the very least.
