I am also a writer but for web content articles only. I haven't tried writing a story since I think I don't have a creative mind for story telling.

I had a major setback for my story. A virus got on my computer and I lost my story. I was halfway through with it too. I was lucky I had a physical copy so I don't have to start over completely from scratch. I was also luvky I was only working on one of my stories on my computer. I still have a long way to go before I am finished because my story keeps changing. Wish me luck everyone.

    Thanks for your advice!
If there's one thing I learned all these years of writing, the term "Professional" isn't and doesn't mean you're damn good. All that it means is whether you're earning money from your writing or not; so don't let that term get you down or discourage you.

Also, on the topic of losing your work on the PC, virus is only one of the many ways you can loose all your data so the best way to prevent that is still doing back ups. Since the beginning I've been a paranoid about losing data so I started started with burning discs, thumb drive, anything I can get my hands on. But really, that method is impractical in this day an age.

Instead, what you can consider is using cloud storage as a back up - dropbox, microsoft's skydrive or Google's Google drive and you never have to worry about losing your data ever again. Also, in cases of losing data after writing half way, there's an auto-save setting which can be configured so you wouldn't lose too much.

For writers who prefer to go about it the keyboard way and has tons of data, I recently discovered a free data management program that helps organize large chunks of notes, it's called yWriter, you can try googling it.

I am working through my setback and my story is progressing at a good pace. I should be back where I was within the next two weeks. I am still working on my other stories as well because I want to get my ideas down before I lose them.

Yeah that happens to me too. I just take a breather from my story and wait for the scene to work it out. I sometimes get past my block that way. There are also times when I will workout to get past my block as well.

Getting over blocks has been a topic for countless centuries, bottom line is, you gotta try all and every method until you find one that works for you. Most of these methods however are basically getting your mind off whatever you're working on at the moment so it's entirely up to you to improvise and discover ways that would work for you.

Oh yeah, before I forget, the thing about submitting your written works to the publishers is all about market. Especially in Singapore where the market is small, publishers aren't all that willing to publish just about anything you can throw at them even if it may be good. So in that sense being rejected doesn't mean your hard work is wasted or whatsoever.

There are a few options to consider if you want to make a few buck out of your own written works -

    1. Submit to all publishers in Singapore, submit multiple times
    - Which is what some authors do - being persistent, sometimes your manuscript doesn't reach time at the time where the content may appeal to the mass audience, so re submit (with amendments / improvements of course, especially to your query letter) or better yet, submit to all until one appreciates what you have to offer.

    2. Find an agent
    - Some people dislike the idea of having a third party to intervene but they are your best chance at getting your book published. HOWEVER, that mainly applies to bigger countries where there are many publishing houses unlike Singapore. So in Singapore, there is still a chance you can get your book published by mainstream publishers.

    3. Join a writer's group
    - There are a few writer's groups in Singapore and one which I know of does self-publishing of collective works. Joining a writer's group also means you have a group ready to critique your works, give you advice on publishing ... etc.

    4. Publish overseas
    - Sadly, some genres are just not accepted by Singapore publishers so your next best option is to try overseas publishers or overseas literal agents.

    5. Self publish
    - There are sites which allows you to self publish into e-Books thus effectively cutting away all the painful process of rejection from publishers and such, but that also means you're all on your own. One of the sites I know if Kobo Writing Life – Self-publish eBooks with Kobo, you can try researching the rest.
