Like I said. I submitted everything to the police and they can't do much to help me. It's cross border issues and it has alot of restrictions on the police in Singapore.

Just some advice, next time if you receive any email from ur bank/paypal/ebay, with a link attached which is supposed to direct you to the site to do whatever the email says, do NOT click on it. Instead, type the address manually into the address bar. This is coz the link may look exactly the same, but when you click on it, it actually diverts you to a bogus site that looks exactly the same. And they will ask you to log in from there. The moment you do, they may have captured your login ID, password and planted a key logger onto ur com. Anything you type can and will be sent over to them.

And if you find that your bank is asking you to update ur information, do not do so until you found out from the bank that they actually did send that email. But usually banks do not use emails to get customer update info. So be on the lookout.

These scams are getting rampant as we speak and we ought to be careful when dealing with monetary transactions on the net. Nothing is secure anymore.

Hope that helped. I just learnt all these in my previous semester subject and thought I'd share.

Let me give another alert for another case that occurred to my colleague. They used the same modus operandi for her case.

So people! Be alert and aware of these people from "United state of America" posting to London!

Erm...these ppl can also claim that they are from any country. Doesnt mean it must be from the USA posting to London.

    Dear ppl,

I have just fallen into the trap. My case is exactly the same but involved a laptop. The thing that struck my mind that it was a scam is that the person ask me to send another SGD 1,139(USD900) as account activation fee before crediting the payment for the laptop to me. Which account activation fee has to cost USD900?!

I was still hoping I can earn some money by selling things online as this is my first time. I feel so stupid by sending him a newly released and brand new laptop.

Is there any advice from fellow peers here that I can recover the money or laptop. Thanks..

The best bet is to send a ticket to ebay and paypay. Just consider it as a lesson learnt in the meantime.

Tried the police, british post, singpost etc etc...exhausted all mediums to try to recover back my items. Unfortunately, items sent out are not recoverable. ESP MONEY THAT IS WIRE TRANSFERRED!!!! No bank or wire transfer company will accept any responsibility or will help you recover back anything if you are scammed.
Sorry to hear about your case, Jaywong, there is nothing that can be done once scammed. =(
Hope more people can bump up this thread and bring greater awareness to such scams.

There is another scammer I encountered on Etsy long ago.

He will approach you, asking to buy *item* from you, and say it is a gift for his father. This buyer will claim he is a sailor at sea and will arrange for somebody else to pick up the purchase from you. Super fishy. I googled around, and found that this scammer will eventually lead you into sending money through an "agent" so he can send you money, or something like that. Needless to say, the money you send will, most likely, never come back to you, and the "buyer" won't compensate you for it. I ignored the fraudulent messages and they didn't bother me further.
