still surviving? how's everyone? lol!!
for me as usual pretty darn tied to school and getting worn out by the end of every week
tat i just wanna stay in bed for the weekends and do nothing but sleep
but, such is (school)life
instead of western painting, as original intended when i enrol myself to art school,
i decide to take the leap and major in Chinese ink painting.

^I don't really see any... "Major" point in going into Art classes. I mean, you will learn a sh!t ton of things. But for me, I personally feel art is more "Self taught" because when you "learn" something, you most likely feel you HAVE to use that. But really, it's up to you.
Edit: Not saying it's useless. Some people learn differently. But for my learning process in art, I view it as self taught
Edit: example: I "self taught" what I call "BS Lining"
Take a look at this:
One of my friends drawings
Pretty simple right? if the lining was more smooth this would look awesome. BUT! Even with that added, something would look off... it doesn't "feel" detailed. Even though it very well could be.
Now, take a look at this
There really is no reason for those lines. But it "feels" detailed because there's more lining on the screen
So, I recreated my friends drawing with my character, add the BS lines and-
(Rough draft btw) there you have it. There's really no purpose for those lines, but it's more visually enticing for the eye because it "looks" detailed.

but to some, it tells a lot more of wat the creator is trying to achieve, or tell of that certain subject
let's take the example u attached, Cooler's final form, as example
we would understand that the white parts are exoskeleton-ish parts
but what happens if the BS lines weren't added?
the lines added is to illustrate not only the hard- and dryness of the exoskeleton
but also give a hint of the weathering it receive from combat
i mean, sure the one who design the character could just do away with the lines
and use solely shades to tell those
but he didn't
actually this doesn't boils down to art education
it simply base of the creator's style.
for example in Takashi Murakami's works, rarely u will find BS linings
cos that's his style - Superflat, which he founded.. and which ironically is a self-proclaimed art movement
which is influenced by anime and manga and the exploration of pop(-sub)culture, consumerism and sexual fetishism.
of cos one can don do with formal art education,
and many professionals had mentioned that one do not need it
and especially so if u had found what u like
but, from what i had gone thru (and heard from seniors) so far is because
simply there's so much they are squeezing into each student
and those aren't even the complete package
at the end of day (or each semester lol),
one would ask wtf the school's trying to teach us?
wtf must i take this or that module?
indeed im feeling this way as in my (and fellow schoolmate) case
the lesson/lecture time we have for our major specialism is shorter compared to other modules
in return, had less time to understand and digest what we'd learned.
definitely it would be retard to think most of us can acheive good results for all modules
ok i think i'd digress lol
but yeah, one can choose to or not to take up formal ar education
especially in these day and age one can google for answers
and get to find good pointers from pros who selflessly give them for free.
although i like to point out that,
a formal art education isn't merely about learning how to make art,
but also the discourse of what is art, when is art "art", can this or that be art, and the usual whole shebangzz of art history and theory... etc.

Well with that being said I'd say an education course wouldn't be so bad lol.
I hadn't taken "art style" into consideration. I guess "BS Lining" is a thing some artists use. Like shading. I see some use lining for shading. But I also see just, regular shading.
I do feel a have a problem with making my art style more manga. I should focus more on my style
Wow, I haven't been here in a while. I won't let this die. But here's some progress on art because... why not. This is an anime related forum lol
Oh and happy new year lol
wow, people still come here?!
Yes. Not that there's anything wrong with that
