The saddest anime that I have ever watched would have to be Air. It was the first anime I watched and did not expect it to have an ending with such impact as it did. If it was not my first anime I am not sure if I would have been hook on anime as I have been.

Let's admit it, Pokemon is less emotional than you'd want (or not want) an anime to be. BUT...
When Ash had to set Butterfree free (what!) -- that has to be the most tears I've ever had in an anime episode. I know of MEN who cried during that episode!

Madoka for me, hands down. I don't know why it's effected me so much more than a lot of animes that I have watched, but it just has. I mean, I haven't really seen TOO MANY animes, and I'm sure that Madoka is definitely not the worst out there, but for now it is staying at the top of my pain list.

I have seen an anime years ago, but I cannot remember the title. It was a movie, it was about siblings and a war. It was really sad, I don't know if I cried but I know for sure it's the saddest one I have seen. It's about how the two poor kids try to survive and make it to the after war.

Anyway, I have heard a lot about how sad the episode is in Pokémon where Butterfree leaves. I haven't seen it, I never watched pokémon much, but it intrigues me how it made many people sad.

Perhaps (if anyone here watched Monster Rancher) it is the same as the episode where Bakue died. That was extremely depressing.

Same here! The saddest anime I ever watched was also Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I remember crying through the entire last episode. Madoka lures you in with the promise of being a cute magical girl anime, then by the 4th episode abruptly takes this dark turn. I loved it. I can't help but get teary whenever I listen to the soundtrack either.

I guess you are talking about Graves of the Fireflies? Grave of the Fireflies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Its quite a heartbreaking movie, but good nonetheless.

Agreed with 2, 3, and 5. The only really sad ones so far.

Attack on Titan has made me cry once or twice though, but it's not hard to make me cry really.

I don't normally like watching tearjerkers, but even in the most action-packed shows in anime, they really know how to put the pathos into character deaths...

I think some of these had me on the verge of tears:

    Cowboy Bebop

    League of Galactic Heroes

    Rurioni Kenshin

    Gundam Seed

    Infinite Ryvius

Pretty much Clannad and Angel Beats comes first to mind. There's something about Jun Maeda, he knows how to choke you up with the OST. On a slightly lesser note I'd also include Fairy Tail! With the length that they've been airing you pretty much feel an emotional connection to the characters themselves, as if you were right there with them from day 1. My opinions at least, I think that characteristic alone defines several great animes. >.<
