For a beginner, I would suggest the following:

    1. Tutorials are your friend.
    2. Have fun.
    3. You don't have to do things to please other people, it's about pleasing yourself.
    4. Learn to love your successes and learn from your mistakes.
    5. Practice

All too often people forget that cosplay is about having fun. No one is going to be 100% perfect for a part. Realistically body types don't all fit the same and that's just fine. It's about having fun and enjoying what you do. I spent a few years in the cosplay community being torn down because I didn't fit the ideal shape or image of a character and got to the point that I actually started to turn away from cosplay. But then I realized I just love the characters and love having fun. That's all that should matter.

If you find someone that you're really passionate about you're going to have an awesome time. When you cosplay you're going to gather attention and it can be good or it might be bad, but I think that having friends who also come along for the ride is also a good way to get started. You might not get it perfect, but if you're having fun, what's left that matters?

I suggest you start making/looking for your costume early. Don't leave it till the last minute because TRUST ME, things will happen and then some things won't be quite right and then you'll be screwed. So for the first time at least, make sure you prepare your costume extra early. Read tutorials and prepare yourself.

But as mentioned above, the most important thing is to have fun ^___^

For a beginner, I would like bring forward the following:
    Step 1. Choose a Costume
Never under-estimate costumes that look easy, they could turn out to be a nightmare. If you have no idea who to cosplay still? Ask a friend who knows a lot about anime or gaming to see what they think.
    Step 2. Find Reference Material
Go online and print out some pictures. Print off as many different angles, drawings, sketches, screenshots, anything that you can or you think you need. If you have the Manga or poster, use that! Depending on the detail, try to find as many different sketches and designs as possible to make sure you can find accuracy!
    Step 3. Set a Budget
Unfortunately, cosplay isn't a cheap hobby. If you think it is, then hopefully you picked an easy character, if not, Expect to spend at least 30-100 dollars minimum, the maximum is in the thousands. But remember, Just because you spend a lot or a little money on it doesn't mean it will or will not be good!
    Step 5. Obtaining the Materials
Now you must get all the cloth and wigs you need, There are hundreds of resources:Local Costume Stores, Walmart, Meijer, Target, K-mart
    Step 7. Completing the costume!
Step 8. You're finished, go to the Con!
