go run around some events and bump into strangers.

If you find some people who portray some of your favourite characters well, it doesn't harm to pay some compliments and stuff. I think nobody would refuse or be unhappy about a compliment?

And everything else starts from there. For a start, if you don't have a coscard, just politely ask 1 the person and ask if you may add him/her on FB or something. Some may be quite sensitive about private accounts so it's always better to ask first and not take offense if you're rejected. In most cases, there are always other ways to remain in contact.

AFA is this weekend... good luck...

I think it is okay to try to strike up conversations when you are at CON. I am a bit shy. However, I love when people compliment my costume. That can be a good way to break the ice. You just need to be willing to chat a bat when you are at events.

The easiest way to strike up a conversation is to just compliment someone's cosplay. Make a little comment and see how they respond. It'll spark a little conversation at least. About three years ago, two boys kept passing me and my cousin in the hallway. They loved our cosplays (Domino and Rogue from Marvel Comics), and stopped and had a little conversation about Marvel. We talked about our favorite characters, the movies, and then we split ways. Then, throughout the con, we just kept bumping into them and saying 'hey' and jumping into other little conversations. Now, three years later, our groups of friends have kind of merged and now we're all really good friends and meetup at every convention we attend.

Not many people at conventions will think you're too odd or get uncomfortable if you just approach them and start making lite conversation. Strike up a conversation, and, if you felt you were both engaged in the discussion, ask if you can friends them on facebook or something. Also, don't be afraid to just say you're new to the cosplay world and are looking for some friends.
