Question What is cosplaying to you?

My school teacher once told me that cosplaying to her was weird. She could never understand why there were people out there who liked cosplay.

So here i am today, seeking answers from fellow cosplayers, what do you think of cosplaying? What is cosplay to you? Is it a hobby, just for fun or do you sincerely enjoy it?

Please be warned that i might be printing this out to give my teacher to see. Do not post if you do not want to be known, i might be inviting her to one of the cosplay events by the way.

So, post whatever information to help me explain what cosplay is to us all. Thanks!! XD
    Two different worlds. . .
And yet, you're still in my mind.

Cosplaying requires the use of imagination and the desire to be someone we admire from mangas, animes, games etc.

It's the same as asking why people bother writing about fantasy universes when things like elves, orcs and magic don't really exist in life. It's the same as children pretending to invite their dolls to tea parties and eat imaginary pasties.

People want to cosplay as someone else because they want to pretend that for just a moment, they're living in a fantastic world far from any troubles they may have.

You can call it escapism if you wish but aren't most hobbies a form of escapism as well? You read novels because you want to immerse yourself in an imaginary world of intrigue, magic and whatnots.

You play soccer because you want to pretend that you can really be a soccer star. Most people do something that will give them a moment of reprieve. Cosplay just seems weird because it's a lot more visual and defeats the purpose if we just stay at home and stare at the mirror.

Naturally people go into cosplay for different purposes. Some go into it to hone their dressmaking skills, some just want to be seen. Yet others just want to make friends and pretend that they're like the wonderful characters in their favourite animes/manga.

It's like acting. Will you call those who act in movies etc weird?

cosplaying is like seeking the adventure that only being in character mode can bring. meh, and it needs plenty of hard work to make a really great costume . and also, just think of the numerous people you can meet when you attend various functions. i leave you to imagine the results.

it teaches you that you have to work for what you want (the process of making a costume is long and arduous). making friends at function is another aspect why people wanna cosplay.

ultimately, it can be summed up in 1 word : fun

tell your teacher that she has much to see and learn.

Cheap shots at fame really. In the harsh reality, you'll rarely be in the spotlight. However, with cosplaying, you'll be standing on your own little stage, with trigger happy photographers over you. It's escapism really, but so is almost every hobbies. And of course there's the looking like the character you adore, which is actually very cool. Soliciting is another another reason some people cosplay.

I've said this before elswehere, but to me...Cosplaying is the challenge of making cool-looking stuff and props and exercising technical skills as well as testing out a variety of interesting materials. It gives me an excuse to make stuff that I won't get to experiment with in real life; and then see what it looks like on a real person.

Cosplay is just a hobby in its purest form. By means of hobby as a form of pleasure, self satisfaction, self enrichment. Every hobby has input, process, and result, so I think for your teacher to understand more about this hobby, she should do some research instead of questioning.

As I say its a hobby, you like you do, you dont like you dont do. I think your teacher should be guilty for not knowing such a simple thing.

Her teacher was just wondering what was there to like about cosplay, there's nothing to be guilty about ._.
In a sense, it was her inquistive nature that spurred her question, so it's fine by me.

i agree wif luna.... i haf a similar view on cosplay... is just like any other hobby..... u need to put in time & effort to it

like my parents who oso find cosplay wierd... i guess those "older" pple r more conservative??? they dont really like pple to do things which dont belong to the mainstream & find us weird..... personally i dont like mainstream stuff other than studies..... is like life is already so borin, y conform urself further... is time to try out smth new & i dont c any BAD things abt cosplayin mayb the costumes r x..... but i bet i'll spend more $ on useless things than 1 costume...
