    Smile Help on otaku subculture

Hi all! I need all your help for my school research project on otaku subculture right here in Singapore.. if you're an otaku yourself or know what an otaku is, pls answer them. Thanks!!

    1. Would you call yourself an otaku?
    2. When did you start to consider yourself or become a part of the otaku community?
    3. What do you think of the otaku community here in Singapore?
    4. Do you usually have gatherings between other otaku members? And what would be the ideal location to meet up?
    5. Do you see being an otaku as one of the important elements in your daily life?
    6. How often do you usually go item-hunting for otaku-related stuff?
    7. What makes you become interested in anime and manga? Is it because of the story, graphics or is there any other reason?

    1) No.
    2) NA
    3) That most of them don't know the definition of otaku. Call yourselves "fans", please.
    4) Nope. NA
    5) NA
    6) Otaku-related stuff...? Define. Do you mean anime/manga/cosplay merchandise?
    7) How interesting characters are, story, art, script. In that order.

Otaku is a really sad term in Japan...

Even otaku in Japan wouldn't admit to a person if they ask if they were an otaku~

otaku need not be limited to anime/manga/cosplay/games.

Otaku is a negative term, which somehow got sensationalised by this drama called densha otoko and then every started calling themselves otaku. Actually there are other shows contributing to this phenomenon, but I'll skip on that.

    anyway, answering TS's question.

    1. I wouldn't declare myself to be one.
    2. don't remember
    3. mainstream-mainstream-mainstream. C'mon! Jump on the bandwagon!
    4. Tis is a sekret
    5. No, why should I?
    6. As often as there is a sale.
    7. Varying degrees of want for different varieties of stuff. Also, there's many DO NOT WANTS.

wow thanks for the reply.. yeah I should've changed the word otaku to hmm fandom? I, myself is a big fan of Jap goods, anime, manga and games lol but I'm wondering if there are any more like-minded people... for the sake of this research topic of mine.. =_=

I got stuck since there's no book or magazines that discusses about the local 'fandom' community right here in Singapore.. if I'm mistaken pls do notify me since I'm looking for those sources.. thanks! keep those answers comin'..

and oh btw I'm sorry if I've offended anyone here.. I'm not saying all of you are otaku's.. hope you all understand

To get things clear; Otaku is NOT a sub-culture.

Its a term for someone who stays at home most of the time and has close to no social life. A MMORPG addict can be counted as an Otaku, even if he doesn't watch Anime.

well I'm discussing the culture within Singapore context and I don't think there are many people who are a true-otakus therefore its a sub-culture right here..

anyway, thanks for all those answers and comments

I never was part of it.

Still in its infancy. We still have self-proclaimed otakus going out of their houses and having a social life, albeit small.

    4. Do you usually have gatherings between other otaku members? And what would be the ideal location to meet up?
I don't, but I do hear that it's popular for them to meet Online.

    5. Do you see being an otaku as one of the important elements in your daily life?
No, that's why I'm not one.

    6. How often do you usually go item-hunting for otaku-related stuff?
    Not applicable to me.

    7. What makes you become interested in anime and manga? Is it because of the story, graphics or is there any other reason?
Story first, big boobs and flawless features second.

An extreme form would be known as a hikkikomori, in case nobody knows. This one totally stays in his/her room and never leaves it, has totally no contact with the outside world except via Internet (if (s)he uses it) and his/her (usually) mother for food.
